  64. This package contains the WinAlter(TM) the Windows File Altering Utility
  65. (Version 2.1), by James Bair.  This document contains
  66. only a brief description of the package and its features, along
  67. with instructions for its installation.  Quite detailed documentation
  68. is included in the package, but it is in archived form, and is more
  69. easily read after installation.

  71. If you've ever wished you could alter the Date, Time, and File
  72. Attributes of files without leaving Windows, then WinAlter is for you...
  73.  
  74. WinAlter is a shareware program.  This evaluation version includes
  75. all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.  You may
  76. use it for up to 30 days, without charge (see WINALTER.TXT for more
  77. details).  If you like the program, and wish to continue its use after
  78. this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program (see
  79. WINALTER.TXT for more details).  Any fee you may have paid to others
  80. (disk vendors, dealers, etc.) to obtain this evaluation version was a
  81. fee for their copying and distribution services, rather than a payment
  82. for continued use of the program.

  84. There are a number of programs that allow you to change the Date, Time,
  85. and/or File Archive Attributes of Files. BUT WinAlter allows you to do
  86. it in Windows. You can even use the Windows technique of Drag-and-Drop
  87. to load files.

  122. ===== Installation =====================================
  123.  
  124. Like many Windows programs, WinAlter needs the file VBRUN300.DLL
  125. in order to run.  Put it in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  Chances are,
  126. you probably have VBRUN300.DLL.  If not, it is readily available from
  127. most on-line services, bulletin boards, and software and shareware
  128. dealers. (Both the Install program AND WinAlter need VBRUN300.DLL).
  129.  
  130. Now, you are ready to go. From Windows Run the SETUP.EXE program and
  131. WinAlter will be installed. You may do this by either clicking on the
  132. "File" Menu and then the "Run" menu in the Program Manager and choosing
  133. or entering the SETUP program; or you may start the File Manager and
  134. then double-click on the SETUP.EXE program line. Windows 95 has the
  135. same procedure except that you click on "Start" then "Run" instead of
  136. "File|Run"; or you use the Windows Explorer instead of the File Manager.

  138. Run WINALTER by clicking or double-clicking on the WinAlter icon as you
  139. would to run any Windows program.
  140.  
  141. When you run WinAlter, a Window will appear with a number of command
  142. buttons. Press "Get File" to enter the names of the files you want to
  143. change. Enter the new Date and/or Time in the designated boxes, press
  144. the "Alter D & T" button and your file or files have a new date and time.
  145.  
  146. If you are running Windows 3.0, NT, or 95, WinAlter works fine, but it
  147. breaks down into different components--including a file called ALTER.EXE.
  148. Run ALTER.EXE for the same results as WINALTER.EXE in Windows 3.1. Run
  149. the "First Time Only" program once; then you may delete that icon and
  150. run the regular "WinAlter" icon.

  152. To alter File Attributes, click on the "Alter Type" button. This alters
  153. one file at a time. The "Alter|Reset to Normal" menu line will rest all
  154. the selected files to "Normal" (i.e., no attribute). A warning appears
  155. when you want to change the System attribute of a file.
